WHAT IS THE POINT OF GOING TO CHURCH?
Why go to church when we could sleep in, catch a matinee, or enjoy a leisurely afternoon with a cup of coffee or tea at one of the countless cafés in Seoul? Good question. We enjoy all those things, but there’s one thing we value more…being in community–and not just any community.
As God exists in three persons—Father, Son, and Spirit—in loving relationship, so Christ calls us into loving relationship with himself and with one another through him. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you” (Jn. 15:12).
As Christ’s body, we try to embody that commandment, albeit imperfectly. We gather in community to see, hear, and experience how the Spirit of Christ is moving among us, challenging, changing, comforting, correcting, convicting, encouraging, nurturing, and shaping us to be Christ’s ambassadors sent into the world to proclaim the Good News of God’s love for everyone. We’ll take that over an extra hour of sleep, the latest blockbuster, or a caramel macchiato—yes, even the macchiato.
